Siliguri, Oct. 10: Child In Need Institute (CINI) has extended its adopt-a-mother-and- save-her-child scheme to the red-light area of Khalpara with the opening of a health centre there today.

CINI had set up its office here in 2002.

Situated in Ward 7, the centre has augmented the services — rudimentary healthcare and treatment — already available at the CINI-run Anandamela. “The new facilities will include provision of comprehensive health services to pre and post- natal mothers, children and adoles-cents,” said CINI’s north Bengal coordinator Marissa Dunne.

At the moment, 105 children between 6 and 14 years, a majority of them girls, will get academic, behavioural and emotional support through various child-friendly approaches. “The centre aims to keep children in a safe environment when their mothers are busy with their work,” Dunne explained.
