Raiganj: An 80-year-old man was hacked to death when he purportedly tried to stop a youth from raping his granddaughter at their house in North Dinajpur's Karandighi on Tuesday night.

The youth also attacked the girl, her grandmother and a child of the family with a dagger. They were admitted to super-speciality hospital in Raiganj.

Police said Ali Shah, who had killed the octogenarian at Gardankata village, had fled.

A relative of the girl said Shah had been teasing her for a few weeks.

"Around 10am yesterday (Tuesday), he forcibly entered her room and tried to rape her. As she raised the alarm, family members rushed for help. Shah was carrying a dagger and attacked all those who came to save her. We have filed a police complaint against Shah who ran away," he said.

The family members said the grandfather was the first to resist the rape and Shah had hacked his throat with the dagger.

The neighbours rushed in hearing the screams and took the injured to the rural hospital in Karandighi where doctors pronounced the grandfather dead. The other three were later shifted to the super-speciality hospital.

"He should be arrested immediately and punished for killing my grandfather and attacking me," said the girl.

In another incident, a youth was fired at after his brother had allegedly kissed a girl in public near Kaliachak in Malda on Tuesday night. The bullet scraped against Ahedur Sheikh's back and he has been admitted to the rural hospital at Silampur near Kaliachak.

Sources said Azizur Sheikh, the victim's brother, had been teasing a local girl for the past few weeks.

"The girl was returning home after tuitions when Azizur proposed to her and kissed her in public. The girl narrated the incident to her family members who started a search Azizur," said a source.

On Tuesday late afternoon, the girl's kin spotted Ahedur, who was returning home from a mosque. "They stopped Ahedur and severely beaten him up. One of the relatives took out a pistol and fired at Ahedur. The bullet scratched him on his back. We have filed a police complaint," said a relative of Ahedur.

The girl's family filed a police complaint against Azizur, accusing him of molesting the girl. "Azizur abused my daughter and even tried to abduct her. We have no idea who fired at his brother," the girl's mother said. #

"The youth who is accused of molesting the girl has fled. Her father and brother are accused of attacking the youth's brother. They are also absconding. We have received two complaints," said Dipak Sarkar, the additional superintendent of police, Malda.
