Alipore: Police arrested a guard of a government girls' school in Alipore on Thursday after a Class I student's parents alleged he had lured her with a chocolate and sexually harassed her.
The police have started a case under Section 354A of the IPC and Section 12 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, an officer of Alipore police station said.
Cops arrested the guard, Rameshwar Singh, 46, after rescuing him from a mob that had gathered in the school and started assaulting him. Many in the mob accused the guard of harassing pre-primary students of the school.
The parents claimed he had harassed the Class I student on Wednesday.
A group of guardians visited the school on Thursday morning to enquire about a 2015 molestation complaint against Singh.
When the school authorities told them that there was no written complaint against Singh, they apparently started thrashing the guard. The school authorities alerted the police.
Meanwhile, another set of guardians landed up at the school and in the absence of Singh assaulted his wife and daughter, the police said.
Their contention: Singh's wife and daughter had termed their allegation "false".
Based on a counter complaint by Singh's wife, the police have started an assault and criminal intimidation case against unknown people.
"We will identify the accused and take legal action," an officer of Alipore police station said.
Some parents alleged Singh would often offer their daughters, all pre-primary students, candies and call them to an isolated place on the campus.
"In the past three months, at least 12 girls have complained to their parents about the guard offering toffees to them," the father of a Class I student said.
The headmistress of the school said she joined in December 2015 and didn't find any complaint in the school records against Singh.
"We haven't received any written complaint against the guard from the parents till Thursday evening," she said. "Ours is a government-run school; so, we have reported the matter to the school education department."
