Gold chain snatching arrest

Police have arrested one of the youths who allegedly snatched a gold chain from Basana Burman, the mother of Asian Games gold winner Swapna Burman.

Jalpaiguri: Police have arrested one of the youths who allegedly snatched a gold chain from Basana Burman, the mother of Asian Games gold winner Swapna Burman.

Jitua Singh was picked up from Kaliaganj, on the outskirts of Jalpaiguri town, on Sunday.

Jitua was produced in a court on Monday and remanded in police custody for eight days.

On Saturday evening, Basana was returning home on a two-wheeler when two youths came on a motorcycle and snatched away the gold chain she was wearing.

After the incident, the police deployed two armed security guards at her house in Ghoshpara and started a search for the snatchers.

"Jitua Singh has admitted to the crime. We are in search of Pintu Singh, the other accused who fled to some other state," said a police officer.

"Pintu hails from Uttar Pradesh. After the crime, Pintu paid Jitua Rs 20,000. We are trying to trace him," said a police source.
