Lake Town: Police arrested Dilip Banerjee, alias Hath Kata Dilip, on Sunday on the charge of holding a man at gunpoint and threatening to kill him.

Banerjee, who has a criminal past since the Left Front days, is now into real estate business in Lake Town, Bangur, Baguiati and Kalindi, police said.

He apparently threatened to gun down Trinath Das, a developer, when he was chatting with friends in Kalindi's Triveni Apartments.

Das, known to be close to a local Trinamul leader, managed to flee. He later filed a complaint against Banerjee at Lake Town police station.

Cops picked him up from his home near Lake Town.

A Trinamul leader claimed Banerjee was close to a party MLA but fell out with him. "He controls the supply syndicates in Lake Town and Bangur." Das, too, is close to the MLA. Another party leader who is not on good terms with the MLA asked Banerjee to threaten Das, the leader said.

He has been booked under IPC sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 506 (criminal intimidation). A Salt Lake court on Monday sent him to three days' police custody.
