Taherpur: Police are looking for a youth accused of killing his 75-year-old neighbour on Sunday in Nadia's Taherpur for his gold chain and two rings.

Rocky Biswas, 29, took Badal Mandal to his home on the pretext of offering him cigarettes and snatched his gold chain worth about Rs 60,000 before hacking him to death with a sharp weapon, the police said.

Biswas couldn't take the rings, though, and he fled with his wife, Tina, after dumping the body under his bed, the police said.

His wife spilled the beans and told her father-in-law Babu Biswas over the phone about the crime, the police said.

Mandal's elder son had recently gifted him the chain and two rings after securing a job at a hotel in Saudi Arabia. Biswas gained Mandal's trust by offering him cigarettes on the sly, the police said.

Neighbours grew suspicious as Mandal was last seen with Biswas. On Monday night, they gathered outside Biswas's home and asked his father about his son's whereabouts.

Babu Biswas called the police who found Mandal's body early on Tuesday.

The police have arrested Biswas's wife Tina from a hideout in Kanchrapara.

A murder case has been started based on a complaint filed by Mondal's daughter Maggie Mary Mandal.

His sons Dipak and John work at a hotel in Saudi Arabia.

Theft

A gang of six entered the house of a footballer in Deganga, North 24-Parganas, on Tuesday and looted valuables at gunpoint. They allegedly held the 70-year-old mother of Manirul Mondal, the footballer, at gunpoint and robbed gold jewellery, silver medals and Rs 70,000. No one has been arrested yet.
