Siliguri: SpiceJet will launch early morning flights between Calcutta and Bagdogra on October 4.
According to the schedule posted on the airline's website on Monday, the new flight will leave Calcutta at 6.05am and land at Bagdogra at 7.20am. The return flight will take off at 7.40am and touch down in the city at 8.55am.
SpiceJet runs flights between Bagdogra and a number of destinations in the country.
"Residents of north Bengal have long been demanding an early morning flight to Calcutta. Most flights from Bagdogra to the state capital are in the afternoon. People often have to reschedule appointments or reach Calcutta a day before," said Jayanta Majumdar, who runs a cab service in Siliguri.
The day's first flight from Bagdogra, to Bangalore, leaves at 9.10am. The last, to Delhi, takes off at 6.45pm.
The first flight from Calcutta reaches Bagdogra at 10.20am. The return flight reaches the city at 11.55am.
"Tourists arriving in Bagdogra from Calcutta in the early morning flight can reach their destinations, such as Darjeeling, Gangtok or the Dooars, by noon. We need early morning flights between Delhi and Bagdogra, too," said Debashis Maitra, president of the Eastern Himalaya Travel and Tour Operators' Association.
Chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday inaugurated an Eco Tourism Centre in Bakhkhali at a programme at Netaji Indoor Stadium. The eco-tourism centre, spread across 28 hectares, has a watchtower and is surrounded with pine trees. The centre will be run by the forest department.
