Low-cost airline Air Asia will operate direct flights between Calcutta and Kuala Lumpur from the first week of November. Malaysia Airline stopped operating on the route in March 2006.

The flight is likely to arrive in the city from Kuala Lumpur at 4.30pm and take-off for Malaysia at 5pm. The airline will operate an Airbus 320 with only economy class seats, said airport sources.

Sanjay Budhia, the honorary consul-general of Malaysia in Calcutta, said: “Air Asia has informed me that it will start a Calcutta-Kuala Lumpur flight on November 7. The flight will boost tourism and business.”

An Air Asia spokesperson refused comment.

Kingfisher launched a Calcutta-Bangkok daily flight on Friday. Sources said 190 passengers took the inaugural flight.
