Visitors, some with food packets and water for patients undergoing treatment, queue up to enter the UNB Building of NRS hospital where the trouble had started after the death of a 75-year-old patient on Monday. Usually visitors have free access to the building as they come to deliver food and water for patients in the afternoon, on Wednesday security was tightened and only those having visitor’s pass were allowed in.

Rama Shaw, a Howrah homemaker, and her eight-year old daughter Srija sit on the floor of the outpatient department at SSKM Hospital as they wait for the doctor around 10am on Wednesday. “My daughter was scheduled to get an MRI scan done. I had to show the report to a doctor,” said Rama. She could do neither. She did not know the name of the doctor and described him as a “surgeon”. She said the doctor was not there. The two left after waiting for over an hour.
