Burdwan: A Calcutta taxi driver has been arrested along with his son for allegedly killing his teenage daughter over her relationship with a jewellery shop worker in Mumbai.

Police cracked the murder from two phone numbers written on the body of the 19-year-old they had found beside National Highway-2 in East Burdwan's Jamalpur on August 31. The numbers were spotted by doms ( body handlers) during autopsy, which concluded that the girl was strangled and her face hit with a blunt object.

The police called the numbers and traced them to the youth in Mumbai, later sending him photos of the body on WhatsApp. "We decided to go to Mumbai and meet the youth," said a police officer.

The youth broke down seeing the photos and confirmed they were of his girlfriend. "He told us that he and the girl hailed from Muzaffarpur in Bihar and were in a relationship. The girl had written his phone numbers on her thigh to hide them from her parents and brother," the officer said.

The duo had in the past fled home twice to marry but were tracked down each time. On the second occasion, the girl's father promised his daughter he would accept the youth as his son-in-law and brought her back home.

"He (the father) later took her to Calcutta. They used to stay in a rented accommodation in Park Circus and stopped her from contacting the youth," said the officer.

The police quoted the youth as telling them the girl might have been killed by her father and brother. "During interrogation, the girl's father told us they had killed her as she was adamant on marrying the youth," said the officer. The two were arrested on Sunday.
