Raghunathpur: The first unit of the Damodar Valley Corporation’s Rs 18,000-crore thermal power plant in Raghunathpur will go for a trial run in March instead of February, the chief engineer of the project said on Wednesday. Commercial generation is likely to begin in May, he added.

Heat on cops

Burdwan: The chief judicial magistrate of Burdwan admitted a petition filed by a 27-year-old homemaker against the officer in charge of Galsi police station alleging that the police were not taking any action against two Trinamul Congress activists who had attempted to rape her on January 14.

Security call

Burdwan: Students of Nursing Training College in Burdwan demonstrated in front of the office of the hostel superintendent of Burdwan Medical College Hospital on Wednesday demanding that more security guards be appointed. On Tuesday, four youths had torn the clothes of some female boarders.

Dean demand

Burdwan: Members of the Burdwan University Teachers’ Association on Wednesday met vice-chancellor Smriti Kumar Sarkar and demanded that the posts of dean in both the science and humanities streams be filled up. The posts have been lying vacant for more than two years.
