Bike crash kills two

Diamond Harbour: Two people in their mid-20s were killed and eight injured in accidents across the city on Monday night.

Around 8.30pm, motorcyclist Samir Haldar, 27, rammed the two-wheeler into a car at Pathar Pratima while returning from a picnic. Neither he nor his pillion passenger Sukumar Haldar, 26, was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, police said.

"The doctor who conducted the post-mortem on the two told us that both had liquid, which appeared to be alcohol, in their stomach," a police officer said.

Cops recorded the statements of those who were there with them at the picnic. "Many claimed the two were drunk when they set off on a motorcycle," the officer said. "Some said they had asked them not to ride the two-wheeler."

Witnesses in the market area where the accident occurred told the police that the motorcycle zigzagged and rammed into the car that was parked along the road, another officer said.

They had suffered multiple head injuries and were declared dead at a hospital in the area.

Eight people were injured in Kella when the Tata Magic they were in skidded and plunged into a roadside ditch, the police said.

"The eight, including the driver, were returning from a picnic and were apparently drunk," an officer said.

"A toto driver, Swarup Halder, spotted the vehicle in in the ditch and took the injured to Diamond Harbour Sub-divisional Hospital."

The driver has been booked for driving recklessly, the officer said.
