An abandoned newborn girl, her fingers bitten off by rats, was found in CA block in Salt Lake on Wednesday night.
Civic police volunteer Gouranga Ganguly, who spotted the baby, alerted cops and the girl was taken to Bidhannagar Sub-divisional Hospital. As her condition kept worsening, the baby was shifted to NRS Medical College and Hospital.
“The baby is extremely underweight, weighing only 1.8kg. Parts of her fingers and ears have been bitten off. We will perform surgery tomorrow. She is responding to treatment,” said Swapan Santra, the medical superintendent of NRS hospital. The child is under the treatment of a five-member medical board.
Ganguly was on night patrol in CA block when he spotted the baby after being alerted by her cries.
A stray dog was barking and jumping around the baby, whose face was sticking out of a cloth wrap. “I thought the dog was going to harm the baby but soon realised that it was trying to protect the child from a rodent. I picked up the baby and called up Bidhannagar (North) police station,” recalled Ganguly.
The incident was the third of its kind in the township in the past month. A baby boy was found lying in a bush beside the Sports Authority of India complex in KB block on August 14. He is still at the subdivisional hospital.
A newborn girl was found in a garbage dump between AC and AD blocks on September 23. She was declared dead on arrival at hospital.
According to Census 2011 figures, the national sex ratio is 940 females for 1000 males. But Calcutta is still lagging behind with only 899 females per 1000 males.
