Bhadreswar, June 25: Hooghly police arrested five persons, allegedly members of a Jharkhand-based gang, from the vicinity of the Dalhousie Jute Mills for links with an interstate arms racket. Two revolvers and 50 grams of heroin were recovered.

Superintendent of police Ajay Kumar said the men, from Bihar and Jharkhand, were involved in several cases of dacoity and drugs and arms smuggling.

Police claimed that the gang had assembled to take revenge on the officer-in-charge of Bhadreswar police station as a couple of months ago, another illegal arms dealer, the brother of one of the five arrested men, was shot dead in an encounter.
