West Port: The body of a 35-year-old man with a deep cut on his throat was found on a deserted patch off Circular Garden Reach Road on Tuesday morning.

Police later identified the victim as Aklim Khan. "He used to sell biryani. But the business failed and after that he allegedly got involved in theft and extortion," an officer of West Port police station said.

"We have started a murder case against unknown person(s). Apart from the slit on his throat, there were no external injury marks," said Vishal Garg, the additional commissioner of police.

Khan's shoes and jacket have been seized from the spot along Sonai Road where the body was found. A plastic glass and a liquor bottle were found beside the body.

"It seems the victim knew the assailant(s) and might have shared a drink or two with him or them. There was no sign of resistance. The fact that his personal belongings were found at the spot suggests he was killed there," an officer of the homicide department in Lalbazar said.

The police were studying his phone call details to try and find out who he was with before the murder.
