Barrackpore, May 1: Two jute mills in Barrackpore, which employ nearly 9,000 workers, declared suspension of work on Labour Day, citing lack of orders.

Both mills produce jute bales and gunny bags for industrial packaging purposes.

The workers of Nafarchand Jute Mill and Kankinara Jute Mill started agitating in front of the gates of the factories this morning after they saw the notices.

"It will be very difficult for us to survive," said Lalan Sau, a worker of Kankinara Jute Mill.

Policemen have been deployed in front of the gates of the two mills.

In both notices, the authorities have cited low production and lack of discipline of a section of workers among the reasons behind the suspension of work.
