Cuttack: The Football Association of Odisha will host the 23rd senior women's National Football Championship in the city from January 28 to February 14.

Association advisor Ashirbad Behera on Thursday said the All India Football Federation had allotted the prestigious championship to the state for the first time in the championship's history.

"The Football Association of Odisha" will conduct the championship jointly with the state sports and youth services department," Behera said.

Association vice-president Bhakta Ballav Das said women's teams from 30 states will take part in the championship. The teams have been divided into eight groups.

The 42-match preliminary stage will run till February 7. The four quarter finals are scheduled for February 9 and 10, while the two semi finals will be played on February 12.

"All the matches will be played at Cuttack's Barabati Stadium, Ravenshaw University Ground and Odisha Police Ground. The opening ceremony will be held at 5.30pm under Barabati floodlights," Das said.

The federation has deputed 20 referees, tree referee assessors and two match commissioners for smooth conduct of the tournament. "The federation will depute scouts to select the best talents for the senior national team," he said.

The state sports and youth services department will award player of the match awards from the quarter finals. The association has a budget of Rs 1.2 crore for the championship. Former national women's team captain Shradhanjali Samantaray said the Odisha team, which underwent a month's training camp, are favourites for the title this year.
