Varsities better than Bihar's, says Malik

Bhubaneswar: Varsities in the state are better than those in Bihar, governor Satya Pal Malik told during a meeting with vice-chancellors here on Tuesday.

Malik, who is holding the dual charge of governor of Bihar and Odisha, said that the state of universities in Odisha was better in comparison to Bihar.

"I am really happy to share that universities in Odisha are doing far better than their counterparts in Bihar," he said. In Bihar, mafia raj rules the education system, exams are not conducted in a fair manner and academic calendar does not exist, he said. "There is no such problem in Odisha," he said.

Vice-chancellors of 17 universities attended the meeting, which was Malik's first interaction with academics ever since he took charge. "Human resource is the biggest asset of the nation and in building it the role of an university is a key factor," Malik said.

The issues of timely conduct of exams, publication of results, distribution of certificates, filing up vacant posts, creation of new posts and maintaining discipline and peace on campuses were discussed at the conference.

Malik spoke about the need to set up sports complexes at all the universities. He asked the VCs to focus on academic exchange with other universities and proper functioning of the placement cell.

He also stressed on research output and advocated introduction of market-oriented and skill development courses in the curriculum.

"We have initiated a number of reforms in higher education," said higher education minister Ananta Das.
