Cuttack, Oct. 13: Police have started gathering evidence against three teachers allegedly involved in the sexual harassment case at SCB Dental College and Hospital by examining witnesses.

A postgraduate student of oral and maxillofacial surgery had levelled allegations of sexual harassment and assault against a senior resident, an associate professor and head of the department at the dental college located in Mangalabag police limits on Monday.

Notices to appear at the police station for questioning have been issued to the three teachers and some witnesses in the case through the principal of the college.

"We have examined two of the three witnesses named by the complainant. Their statements have been recorded," Mangalabag police station inspector-in-charge Arun Kumar Swain said today, adding that the remaining witness would be examined shortly. The investigating officer has also listed a few other witnesses.

A case was registered under Indian Penal Code sections 354 (outraging modesty of a woman), 354A (demand for sexual favours or advances involving unwelcome and explicit sexual overtures) and 354D (attempting to contact despite indication of disinterest).

Senior resident dentist Krishna Gopal Birmiwal had gone to the police station, while the other two - associate professor Niranjan Mishra and head of department Indu Bhusan Kar - are reportedly out of Odisha on exam duty.

"Mishra and Kar will be back on Saturday. They are expected to present themselves to the police on Monday," Swain said.
