Cuttack: Police arrested two persons and foiled an alleged robbery attempt on a vehicle carrying cash from a private hospital at Gouda Gada on the Ring Road along the Mahanadi on Monday.

The cops nabbed Santosh Das, 32, of Bani Sahi in Remuna police limits in Balasore district, and Abhisek Naidu, 28, of Patapol in Cantonment police limits in Cuttack. They also seized two kataris, red chilli powder, three mobile phones and a motorcycle.

Personnel from the Manglabag police station received a tip-off on Monday morning that armed criminals had assembled at an isolated place near Bhuasuni Temple on the banks of the Mahanadi with an intent to commit robbery.

The alleged conspiracy was hatched by a five-member gang that targeted the vehicle that was scheduled to transport cash from a private hospital nearby during the day. Acting on the alert, a team of cops raided the place and nabbed the duo, while the others escaped on a motorcycle.

As the accused had gathered with arms with deadly weapons with an intent to commit a robbery, they were subsequently arrested.

Deputy commissioner of police, Cuttack, Akhileswar Singh said: "During interrogations, we ascertained that the accused were veteran criminals and had been involved in a series of crimes."

"They confessed that they had assembled there to commit a robbery on the Ring Road near Gouda Gada from a person transporting cash from SIPHA Hospital," Singh said.

"They also confessed that on the night of June 8, the group and one of their associates abducted one person from SCB Medical College and Hospital and looted Rs 300 in cash and his mobile phone after assaulting him."

The accused have been booked under Section 399 (preparation for committing dacoity) and Section 402 (assembling for committing dacoity) of the Indian Penal Code.

The cops are on the lookout for the other persons who managed to flee.
