Murder cuffs on siblings
Bhubaneswar: Police arrested two youths on Tuesday for allegedly beating a gym trainer to death in Sunderpada-Sarakantara canal in Airfield police limits on Sunday. Police are also trying to nab the other accused in the case.
The accused have been identified as Sanjay Sahu, 24, and his elder brother Samir, 26. The police said both the accused, in association with a group of others, beat Jyotiranjan Baliarsingh, 25, to death.
"Samir and his mother were travelling on his motorcycle when it collided with the motorcycle of the deceased. The deceased assaulted the youth. Samir then called youths from the area and they assaulted the trainer with lathis, leading to his death," said a police officer.
The police said though the mob just wanted to teach Baliarsingh a lesson, he was accidentally hit near his ear and succumbed to his injuries on way to the hospital.
The cops denied any past rivalry. "The accused attacked the victim in rage after the trainer assaulted him," said a police officer.
On Monday, tension ran high at the national highway near Khandagiri after local residents staged a road block to demand the arrest of those involved in the attack.
The protesters also pelted passengers buses that were passing through the highway with stones.
The police said the siblings escaped after the incident and were picked up from Khurda. "Initially, they denied their involvement, but later confessed. They produced in court today," saod the cop.
Deputy commissioner of police, Bhubaneswar, Anup Kumar Sahoo said the other accused in the case had been identified.
"A police team is conducting raids at various places to nab the rest. We urge citizens to refrain from such incidents. We also advise people to seek help from the police in case of any road accidents," said Sahoo.
