Missive on court benches

Bhubaneswar: Union law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has lobbed the ball back into the Odisha government's court on the demand for setting up permanent benches of Orissa High Court in west and south Odisha.

In a letter to Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik, the minister said the Centre had taken the steps in this regard when Naveen had written on the issue in 2013. " The law minister informed you of the action pending at the level of Odisha government for release of Justice C.R. Pal Commission's report vide his letter on October 7, 2015," the minister wrote, reminding Naveen that action in this regard had to be taken at his end.

Prasad also said proposals with regard to the setting up of a high court bench had to be sent by the concerned state government, which is also to provide infrastructure and meet expenditure after obtaining consent of the high court.

"The next steps in the process, therefore, are to be taken by the state government in consultation with and consent of the chief justice of Orissa High Court and a comprehensive proposal should be sent to the Union government for further necessary action," Prasad said in the letter, urging Naveen to do the needful on his part.
