Miracle of life

MIRACLE OF LIFE: Endangered olive ridley turtles have finally arrived on the Gahirmatha beach in Paradip for their annual sojourn to lay eggs, much to the delight of wildlife lovers and forest officials. The nesting beaches along the Nasi-II missile test range centre at Wheeler's Island are teeming with female turtles, who have made a beeline towards the nesting beach. Digging pits with flippers, the marine animals are laying eggs on the serene beach in millions. Forest officials believe that the number of visiting turtles would go up in coming days. To ensure the safety of the eggs, a 600-metre net barricade has been installed along the casuarina forest cover near the site. Wildlife staff are on round-the-clock vigil to keep predators, such as jackals, hyena and wild dogs at bay, said divisional forest officer Bimal Prasanna Acharya.
