Bhubaneswar, Oct. 14: Police today arrested the prime accused in the abduction of a 23-year-old MTech student of a private university.

Acting on a tip-off, the cops arrested Debashish Mukherjee, 34, from his relative's house. "His wife, who is also a suspect, is still on the run," said Bhubaneswar deputy commissioner of police Satyabrata Bhoi.

Anuj Jha was abducted on October 5 and rescued after a three-hour police operation from an isolated place at Nakhara. "Financial dispute was the reason behind abduction," Bhoi said.

The cops had earlier arrested six persons in this connection, while Mukherjee and his wife were on the run.

The accused abducted Jha, an MTech second-year student, from Jagamara on October 5. The abductors allegedly demanded a Rs 10 lakh ransom from Jha's family members, according to the complaint filed by his relative Kunal Goswami with Khandagiri police.

"Jha came in contact with Mukherjee, who monitored him for days. Mukherjee is a broker and uses his contacts to get students admission into various educational institutes," said a police officer.

He said Mukherjee was arrested earlier in a case of fraud by Air Field police. "He had a criminal record. He duped students of Rs 4 lakh by promising them admission into medical colleges," he said.

Ajay Patra allegedly consumed poison as part of the game's third round challenge. He is undergoing treatment at district headquarters hospital.
