Phulbani: A woman allegedly barged into the house of her former boyfriend and set ablaze three motorcycles at Sunapanga village in Baliguda police limits of Kandhamal district.

The incident occurred around 12.30am on Saturday night. Police have launched an investigation after D.L. Dinesh lodged an FIR alleging that his ex-girlfriend had perpetrated the crime.

Sources said the woman, Sweety Naik, 20, wanted to take revenge against Dinesh for allegedly refusing to marry her. She had allegedly attempted to murder him a couple of months ago when their relationship started to sour.

A complaint lodged at the time by Dinesh was amicably settled at the police station after the woman gave a written undertaking not to repeat the offence, the police said.

The cops have made a spot verification of the incident and the accused woman is absconding. Eyewitnesses, including Dinesh, said they had seen Naik flee the spot after setting the motorcycles on fire, the police said.

Naik's house is located about 5km from the complainant's home. The police are looking into all possible angles, including if the accused was accompanied by some male companions.

Instances of men taking revenge on their girlfriends after the breakdown of a relationship have come to light in the past. However, this is the first reported case of a woman committing such a crime in the district, the police said.
