Berhampur: Family members fulfilled the wish of a 54-year-old woman by donating her organs to a super-specialty at Visakhapatanam after she passed away.

Lakhmi Sahu, a native of Chudialanji village in Patrapur block of Ganjam district, was proclaimed brain dead at the hospital.

She had met with a road accident on May 17. She had suffered serious head injuries and was rushed to the hospital in the neighbouring state. Despite the best of efforts, the doctors could not save her, said the deceased's husband Narasingha Sahu.

The bereaved family promptly donated the body to the hospital as desired by the deceased in her "will deed".

"In accordance with Andhra Pradesh Transplantation Of Human Organs Act, 1995, I gave the consent to donate my dead wife's liver, kidney and eyes under Jeevandan programme of the Andhra Pradesh government," said the bereaved husband.

The kidneys, eyes and liver were removed from her body. The eyes and one kidney were immediately transplanted to patients waiting for organ transplant, he said.

"She had wanted her body to come to the use of those requiring transplantation to remain alive. We have paid respect to her desire," he said.
