Bhubaneswar, Oct. 12: An assistant professor at Utkal University has levelled allegations of sexual and mental harassment against faculty members of his department.

Students, on the other hand, today staged a demonstration alleging that the assistant professor in question was not co-operating with them in their pursuit of academics.

The 33-year-old teacher accused his colleagues of harassing him with the intention of driving him out of the university. "I am the only male teacher in my department and my female colleagues have been provoking the students to go against me. Their only motive is to force me to tender resignation so that they can bring in a preferred faculty member," said the teacher, who had joined the university in July 2016.

He also alleged that one of his colleagues had made sexual advances, so that she could implicate him in a sexual harassment case.

"Since my joining, they have been harassing me in one way or the other. Once they had even accused me of stealing a computer and referred to me as a security threat to the department," he said.

Sources said he had completed his masters degree from Delhi University and subsequently got his PhD from the University of New South Wales. Earlier, he had worked as a teaching assistant at IIT, Kanpur.

"This is a well-planned conspiracy against me, and I had lodged a complaint with the university authorities in June last year. But, my colleagues managed to malign me in front of the authorities, for which the inquiry report is yet to be filed. If the situation persists, I will be forced to seek police help," he said.

"He only teaches through PowerPoint presentations and never allows us to ask questions. He never clears our doubts," said an agitating student.

The department head denied the allegations.

"Students had brought similar allegations against him last year, for which other faculty members were asked to take his classes. He has been making false allegations since he joined our department," she said.
