Girl's body exhumed for probe
Baripada: The body of a five-year-old girl was exhumed and sent for post-mortem on Thursday after her family members had alleged that she died due to the effect of vaccination of measles and rubella.
The incident occurred at Agnikumari village in Mayurbhanj, and the girl, Joytsna Malik, died on Monday at Pundit Raghunath Murmu Medical College and Hospital in Baripada.
Sub-divisional police officer S.R. Mahapatra said: "Since her parents had alleged that their daughter's death was caused by the effects of vaccination, the body was exhumed and sent for autopsy."
Baripada chief district medical officer Deepak Dasmohapatra, however, said that most likely, the girl died of malaria or brain encephalitis or both.
The child had fever and was in a serious state when admitted to hospital. The paediatric specialist, who had treated her, said the death occurred as the girl was suffering "from acute stage of malaria and feverish brain encephalitis".
