Bhubaneswar: Low cost carrier Air Odisha is set to start operations between Bhubaneswar and Raipur, the Chhattisgarh capital.

The service, which is scheduled to start from Wednesday, has already received the nod from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

The flight will depart from Bhubaneswar at 6.10am and arrive in Raipur at 7.40am. The return flight will depart from Raipur at 12.15pm and reach Bhubaneswar at 1.40pm. The service will be available six days a week, except Sundays.

Sources said the 20-seater aircraft will have two pilots and one crew member. The carrier won rights to fly on 50 regional routes and had received its scheduled commuter operator permit from the DGCA in February. The carrier will also connect to Jagdalpur in Chhattishgarh and Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh.

"The service will help both the cities grow and increase the importance of the airports," said an airport official. Earlier this year, Air Odisha launched its maiden service under the regional connectivity scheme (Udan) with the first flight to Mundra from Ahmedabad.

Sources said the carrier would also connect Jharsuguda and Rourkela when the airstrips are ready. "The service will reduce travel time between the cities as it would take 90 minutes from Bhubnaeswar. We are hopeful of similar inter-state flight operations," said Devikalyan Mohapatra, an Air Odisha executive.

The Bhubaneswar airport registered a 39.4 per cent growth in passenger traffic in 2017-18 compared to 2016-17. Official data suggests 3,250,635 passengers, both domestic and international, flew from the airport in 2017-18. The number was pegged at 23,324,33 in 2016-17. "We are hopeful of other air carriers introducing flights to other important cities as the airport has been witnessing constant growth," added the airport official.
