Balasore: A man hacked his wife to death on Tuesday night at Sahada village in Chandipur police limits after she had refused to part with money for liquor.

Angered over the incident, the villagers thrashed the accused.

Police later took the injured Ajay Kamila, 36, into custody and shift the body of Sumitra, 28, to hospital.

Sadar sub-divisional police officer Pravash Chandra Pal said: "The accused was drunk and killed his wife with a sharp weapon following an altercation."

Ajay's neighbours said he was a liquor addict and used to spend all his income on alcohol, while Sumitra used to contribute to the family income by running a makeshift eatery. On Tuesday night, Ajay fled the scene after killing his wife. Later, the villagers found him lying elsewhere in a drunken state.
