Bhubaneswar: Chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday kicked off the "Save Mahanadi" campaign and also asked the BJP leaders to refrain from shedding crocodile tears on the issue.

"The state BJP leaders should rather asked their counterparts in Chhattisgarh to stop construction in the Mahanadi upstream," he said. He launched the fortnight-long campaign from Sukhasoda village in Jharsuguda and Chikli village in Bargarh district located on both sides of river.

Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan tweeted: "Naveen enjoys the political right to criticize BJP. But what he has done over the last 18 years? The government has to answer why it failed to enhance the irrigation facilities in the Mahanadi and other river basins over the years. The state has completely failed in the utilization of water and the people of the state have realized it."

Naveen also flagged off bike rallies as part of the campaign.
