Alma Fiesta kicks off in capital

Bhubaneswar, Jan. 14: The annual socio-cultural festival of IIT Bhubaneswar, Alma Fiesta, kick-started this evening.

Chairman of board of governors IIT, Bhubaneswar, Padma Bhushan Prof. P. Rama Rao inaugurated the function at the city-based Janta Maidan today. The inaugural evening today began with Leela, a one-hour performance by Swabhiman Group, which works towards the development of differently-abled children. The following two days will witness performances by one of the top bands of India, Cynical Recess, and famous Bollywood singer Krishna Beura, the organisers said.

“Speedy the Turtle is the mascot of Alma Fiesta, 2011,” said chief coordinator of the festival Anshuman Kumar.

The second day will begin with the kite flying competition that will revive the age-old tradition of Makar Sankranti.

The day will continue with a variety of events that include dramatics competition Face-Off, dance competitions and Salsa workshops. Besides these, Alma Fiesta will also host the hilarious movie spoof competition Parody Paradise.

Sparks will fly as bands clash together in the big battle. Events such as Shaedz, Blind Strokes and an origami workshop have been lined up for artists and painters.

“The highlight of the day will be a performance by one of the top bands of India, Cynical Recess, from Calcutta,” the chief co-ordinator said.

On the third day of the fest, Alma Fiesta will start off with a call for awareness regarding Olive Ridley Turtles as part of the Youth Marathon. The group dance competition TopsyTurvy, business quiz Bizz It and Alma Fiesta Youth Quiz will follow.

A number of events such as Fame Game, Air Guitar, and Rise Up will be held during the course of the day.

The social aspect of Alma Fiesta will be voiced during events such as Perspective, the social case study competition, N-Circled, the street play competition and Trashcan Novelties. The valedictory day will be marked by the performance of famous Sufi singer Krishna Beura. More than 200 colleges from the state are likely to take part in the festival.
