Guwahati: The Varsity Week organised by students of Gauhati University on its campus began from Thursday with much fanfare.

There are more than 100 events categorised under Sports, Culture and Literature in which post-graduate students of the university will participate.

The event was inaugurated with hoisting of the university's flag and that of the Post Graduate Students' Union (PGSU).

After hoisting the university's flag, vice-chancellor Mridul Hazarika said: "This Varsity Week will be a memorable one for me. As a VC, this is my last address in a Varsity Week of Gauhati University as I am in office for not more than four to five months. I hope the Week will be a platform for all students to show excellence and display sportsmanship to the world."

"We, the entire family of GU, must appreciate the number of innovative steps which are being taken by the PGSU 2016-18 that will transform the image of this historic institution and lift it to a new height in days to come," Hazarika said.

The inaugural session also remembered the martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the Assam Agitation. The tribute to martyrs was paid by AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath.
