Agartala, Sept. 16: Tripura Central University, which was upgraded to a central university in 2007, now confronts the threat of being downgraded to C category from its current C-plus status.

A nine-member NAAC team headed by vice-chancellor of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Lucknow, Ranbir Chander Sobti, yesterday expressed displeasure over the teaching standard, performance and poor administration of the university.

The team, which visited the university and spoke to students and teachers, vented its ire on the institution for "multi-pronged failures" and non-performance.

But as the team was speaking to vice-chancellor Anjan Ghosh, registrar Onkar Sadhan Adhikary and other officials at the meeting, the situation took a serious turn when a professor of Sanskrit department, Jyotish Nath, started making allegations about the malpractices and irregularities in the university.

Despite being heckled by colleagues in front of the NAAC members, Nath referred to alleged embezzlement of Rs 10 crore in the name of procuring e-books for the university library. But at this point Nath forcibly taken away and prevented from speaking further by a group of unruly professors.

Even as he was leaving the auditorium, he was abused and heckled by professors, ministerial employees and a group of students backed by the vice-chancellor and other professors. "One particular youth whom I failed to identify brandished a revolver at me and threatened me. It is now for the media and the people to give me security and save my life," said Nath.

The NAAC team is holding a meeting today also with the vice chancellor and professors of the university and a select group of students has been allowed access to the meeting but Nath has not been allowed to enter the meeting hall.

Registrar Adhikary said Nath had been put under suspension by the former vice-chancellor Arunudoy Saha for "unbecoming behaviour" but got the suspension order revoked by court order.

"He had actually insulted a lady professor in the Sanskrit department before being suspended. He had also raised a hue and cry over a PhD degree conferred on a senior college professor," said Adhikary.

Regarding the grading of the university, Adhikary said, "This grading is done by the NAAC on the basis of certain specific parameters. So far, we are in the C-plus category but now a fresh grading will be made after the ongoing inspection."
