Agartala: The state government is contemplating to host the National Games 2024 in Tripura, sports secretary Samarjit Bhaumik told reporters on the sidelines of an event here on Sunday.

"Sports minister Manoj Kanti Deb has instructed me to do the needful to host the event. He went to meet Union minister of state for youth affairs and sports (independent charge) Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore in New Delhi on Saturday. The state already has well-furnished sports installations, including gymnasiums and stadiums. The Centre assured that more funds would be provided. We are hopeful of having the honour," he said.

The Assam Rifles on Sunday organised Run for Unity, a 5km run, here to promote national integration and unity among civilians and the armed forces.

The run began at 7am from Swami Vivekananda Maidan and covered the key public places across the city.

Nearly 1,000 athletes from various local social organisations, BSF, CRPF and the Assam Rifles participated in the run.

Commander of the 21 Sector of the Assam Rifles Brig. Ashwini Nayar said the event was organised to promote healthy lifestyle.

"The programme aims to unite various social forums, armed forces and common people for the greater cause of national integration," he added.

Sports secretary Samarjit Bhaumik, who also attended the flagging-off ceremony, said games and sport were excellent means to achieve unity in society.

Referring to the instance of Manipur, he said, "Once insurgency-ridden state is now one of the most peaceful states in the Northeast as the government, in collaboration with the Centre, extensively promoted sport."
