Tezpur, July 26: A 27-year-old-youth from Sootea-Barangabari in Assam’s Sonitpur district today made an attempt to enter the Limca Book of Records by playing five traditional musical instruments — tal, dhol, khol, nagara and xonkho — while riding a bike on a 120km route from Tezpur to Gohpur.
Basanta Das, however, will have to start all over again, as he met with a minor accident at Sootea, 65km from here, from where started.
Das had suffered mild injuries after he fell from his bike.
He was taken to a public health centre in Sootea for treatment before embarking upon his journey again for another 30km to Ratwa.
The organisers, however, asked him not to continue beyond Ratwa, 95km from here, as it may pose a risk to his health.
The Brihattor Sootea Jatyatabadi Yuba Samaj had organised the bike feat as a “save rhino” campaign, flagged off by Sootea MLA Padma Hazarika here.
Das was escorted by 20 bikers from the Yuba Samaj and over 200 people from various parts of the district.
“Limca Book of Records gave us a distance of about 120km and so I tried to complete it. But suddenly I lost control in the traffic after crossing 65km from Tezpur ASTC bus stop to Sootea ASTC stop. I am sad that I could not complete the journey. But there is always a next time,” he said.
Basanta said the regimen was very tough and that he had to practise hard before attempting the feat.
“These traditional percussion instruments are not being played as much as they were before. So, we have to make the new generation aware of these instruments. Moreover, we need to save the rhino,” he said.
The Yuba Samaj president, Uday Shankar Saikia, said: “We have received support from the people of the district and the administration. We want to preserve the rhino and also promote traditional musical instruments among the new generation.”
Earlier, after flagging off the campaign, Sootea MLA Hazarika told reporters that the government had totally failed to protect animals, particularly the rhino.
“This campaign is to make everyone aware of this fact. Basanta has come up a great ambition and people need to follow him,” he added.
