Silvius Condpan passes away - Condolence meet today

Guwahati, Oct. 10: Rajya Sabha member from Assam and senior Congress leader Silvius Condpan passed away this evening at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi.

He was 73.

Condpan, a tea community leader from Darrang district, was suffering from diabetes and was admitted to AIIMS few days back, the chief minister’s press adviser, Pankaj Bora, said.

He leaves behind three sons and a daughter.

Condpan was an MLA and minister during the tenure of former chief minister late Hiteswar Saikia. He was also a leader of the Congress Legislature Party as well as the Opposition in the Assembly.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi, Assam PCC president Bhubaneswar Kalita and Nagaland PCC president S.I. Jamir, among others, have condoled his death.

Kalita said a condolence meeting would be held at Rajiv Bhawan here tomorrow.

Condpan was elected to the Assembly in 1978 and remained a member continuously till 2001.

He became a minister of state for the first time in 1983 and assumed the office of a cabinet minister in 1991.

A graduate in law from Gauhati University, Condpan had earlier served as a government employee and also practised as an advocate.

Interested in the welfare activities for the uplift of the underprivileged, Condpan was awarded the B.R. Ambedkar Award with the recommendation of the Assam State Dalit Sahitya Academy in 2003 at New Delhi.
