Shillong, June 28: Nearly 300 shops were dismantled today at Polo Market to make way for construction of a shopping complex.

The Shillong Municipal Board, amid tight security, undertook the demolition drive following a court order in May this year.

Some of those who were affected by the demolition were rehabilitated in another area near the market.

This rehabilitation applied only to those who had registered themselves with the municipal board.

The 290-odd demolished structures, including godowns, were located in nearly 48,000 square feet.

With this demolition, the process of constructing the Rs 21.41-crore shopping complex will begin.

Sources said construction would begin by August- September and the work should be completed within 18 months.

The construction of the shopping complex remained stalled for three years because of litigations pending before the court, sources said.

The construction cost is likely to escalate in view of the delay in starting work, the sources added.
