Kohima, June 27: The Mokokchung district administration has clamped Section 144 CrPC in the town to prevent any untoward incident, which may arise from the tension created after two cabinet ministers were axed by chief minister T.R. Zeliang on May 24.
Zeliang had to drop four cabinet ministers — home and health minister Imkong L. Imchen and minister for sports and youth resources, Merentoshi R. Jamir — both from Mokokchung and minister for industries and commerce, Pangnyu Phom and minister for school education, C.M. Chang from Longleng and Tuensang districts respectively.
The situation deteriorated after Mokokchung division of the Naga People’s Front (NPF) was dissolved by the central office at Kohima.
Today, hundreds of party workers of NPF prevented newly inducted cabinet ministers, Nuklutoshi Ao and Benjongliba Ao from holding a party meeting at the NPF office in Mokokchung.
The two ministers are in town to convened a meeting and pacify the peeved party workers.
On June 23, the office of NPF was bombed by unidentified person. On May 25, angry party workers burned the effigy of party president Shurho-zelie Liezietsu for dissolving the party.
The supporters of the two ministers and another group of NPF, who have prevented ministers from holding the meeting today, nearly clashed today which prompted the district authorities to clamp Section 144 CrPC.
Former minister Imchen has also expressed dismay at dissolving the party division adding that such an action could be the beginning of the downfall of the NPF. He has been credited with the consolidation of party in the district, once the stronghold of the Congress.
Despite the unrest and crisis, Liezietsu and Zeliang have remained silent.
Last month, the party office in Longleng was also ransacked for axing the former minister.
The NPF members in Zunheboto, Dimapur and in Tuensang were also not happy with the recent reshuffle of the cabinet and have been asking the chief minister to review the decision.
