Recognition for HIV lab in Silchar

Guwahati, Aug. 22: The National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories under department of science and technology of the Union government has accredited the HIV-testing laboratory at the department of microbiology of Silchar Medical College and Hospital, Silchar.

With the recognition, the HIV-testing centre at the medical college has become second such centre in Assam after one at Assam Medical College and Hospital, Dibrugarh, and third in the Northeast among government medical colleges/institutes.

N.K. Beria, deputy director (blood safety) of Assam State AIDS Control Society, said the accreditation would ensure international recognition of reports.

The society has provided all the necessary support, which it received from department of AIDS control of the Union government to the laboratory for fulfilling the required norms to get the accreditation.

The department of microbiology, GMCH, AMCH and SMCH, are designated as state reference laboratories by the department of AIDS control for testing of HIV. Another HIV-testing centre at GMCH is under the process of achieving the accreditation.
