Quack held for doing surgeries
Guwahati: CID officials on Tuesday arrested a 38-year-old homeopathy practitioner for performing surgeries, endangering the safety of patients.
"Lokman Hekim was arrested after he was found to be illegally working as an assistant surgeon in the maternity ward of Marwari Hospitals at Athgaon. His chamber at Jalukbari was also searched," a source said. The CID learnt that Hekim was conducting surgeries for the past three years. Officials also seized several documents from the hospital and his chamber.
A case has been registered against Hekim at the CID police station and he would be produced in court on Wednesday. Hekim has been charged under Sections 420 (cheating), 406 (criminal breach of trust), 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the IPC.
"There is definitely negligence on part of the authorities since they have allowed a person, who does not have an MBBS degree, to work in the hospital," the source said.
The source said Hekim had performed 23 surgeries in February alone, according to hospital records. Hekim has confessed he had a homeopathy degree from a college in Nagaon. The source said he was arrested on the basis of a complaint lodged by Jitul Deka, general secretary of Asomiya Yuva Manch.
General secretary of Shree Marwari Databya Aushadhalaya, which runs Marwari Hospitals, Anil Jaina, said Hekim was not on their roll and never performed any surgery on his own. "He is not our employee and only assisted doctors during surgeries. We will now conduct an internal inquiry and take corrective measures."
