Guwahati, Feb. 9: The Left Democratic Manch, Assam, a conglomerate of 11 Left-leaning political parties, today demanded publication of the draft National Register of Citizens (NRC) by March 31 this year and a stop to government intervention in the updating process.

A delegation of the Manch, which met chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal yesterday and submitted a memorandum, also demanded rehabilitation of families left homeless owing to evictions by the state government. The team expressed apprehension about the possible delay in publication of the draft NRC.

The delegation also demanded that all landless citizens in the state should be allotted land pattas (deed).

"Without following the legal procedure, no person should be labelled foreigners and evicted from the land they are living (on). Those evicted in Mayong, Darrang and Kaziranga should be rehabilitated on humanitarian grounds," the memorandum said.
