Bongaigaon: Local residents staged a protest at Mulagaon here on Wednesday over the dilapidated Bongaigaon-Salbari road ahead of chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal's visit.

The protesters alleged that AGP legislator and minister for food and civil supplies Phani Bhusan Choudhury had instructed the public works department to repair the road only up to the site where the chief minister would lay the foundation stone of Bongaigaon Engineering College on Thursday.

The protesters burnt the effigy of PWD minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Recently, Choudhury said the college is being set up under his initiative.

Addressing a news conference here, president of the party's Bongaigaon district unit Sankar Prasad Ray said the proposal to set up the college had been passed in the Assembly in 2012, during the Congress rule.

"Choudhury had no role in bringing the college in Bongaigaon," Ray said.

The party also demanded that the college be set up at Barsangaon, about 2km from its present site near Sanyasi hillock.
