Silchar, Jan. 29: The BJP is expected to announce the name of its candidate for the coming bypoll to Ratabari Assembly seat in Karimganj district in a day or two, sources said.
The byelection will be held on February 26, along with the Assembly polls in Tripura, Meghalaya and Nagaland. The constituency has about 1.20 lakh voters.
Sources said the two prominent aspirants for the BJP’s nomination are former BJP legislator Shambhu Singh Malha and Dibyendu Das, son of former BJP MP D.N. Das.
The Congress is likely to announce the name of its nominee in the first week of February.
Sources said the party was examining the prospects of Ram Paery Rabida, a former MLA, who has sought nomination. His candidature is being backed by the INTUC-affiliated Cachar Cha Sramik Union (CCSU). Ratabari has a sizeable population of tea labours.
In another development, the two factions of the Marxist Manch, an offshoot of the CPM, reunited on Sunday ahead of the bypoll. The Manch had backed the candidature of legislator Ratish Choudhury, whose death has necessitated the bypoll.
Abdul Khalik Bangal and Chinmoy Choudhury have been named president and general secretary of the Manch respectively.
