NHRC seeks report on disrobing
Itanagar: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Friday issued a notice to the Arunachal Pradesh government seeking a detailed report on the disrobing of 88 girl students as punishment at Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya in New Sagalee.
Terming the incident as "inexcusable", the commission sought action taken report against the teachers involved in the incident and steps taken for counselling of the victims within four weeks.
The commission asked the Union human resource development secretary to inform whether any guidelines for protection of students from maltreatment or humiliation was circulated to the states and status of its implementation, if any, in four weeks.
"Such inhuman and insensible act cannot be expected from a teacher. Stripping minor girls in front of the entire school is unethical and cruel act committed by the teachers who were their lawful custodians and protectors, at that time. The right to dignity of the innocent minor girls has been grossly violated and it will definitely take time for them to overcome the trauma," the notice said.
