Aizawl: Amid opposition from some quarters, former Kerala BJP president Kummanam Rajasekharan was on Tuesday sworn in as the 23rd governor of Mizoram.

Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court Ajit Singh administered the oath of office and secrecy to Rajasekharan at Raj Bhavan's Durbar Hall here in the morning.

Rajasekharan replaced Lt Gen. (retd) Nirbhay Sharma who completed his term on Monday after taking charge in May 2015.

The swearing-in was attended by chief minister Lal Thanhawla, his cabinet colleagues, MLAs and party leaders including Mizo National Front (MNF) president Zoramthanga and state BJP president J.V. Hluna.

Speaking to reporters after the oath-taking ceremony, the politician-turned-governor said he would give priority to all-round development of the state.

"This is the first time I am holding the post of governor. I will try my level best for welfare and well-being of the people of Mizoram. My main aim is to develop Mizoram, promote education, trade and commerce besides agriculture," Rajasekharan, 66, said.

On allegations by other parties that his appointment as the governor could have impact on Mizoram politics, Rajasekharan said: "I will not get involved in active politics but will abide by the ethics of the governor's office."

Born on December 23, 1952, at Kummanam village in Kerala's Kottayam district, Rajasekharan is a BSc from CMS College Kottayam and obtained a post-graduate diploma in journalism.

Rajasekharan started his political career as an activist of RSS and Sangh Parivar in Kerala in 1970.

In 1987, he resigned from government service and became a full-time Sangh Parivar worker.

Rajasekharan had been appointed as the state BJP chief in 2015.

Rajasekharan and Ganeshi Lal were appointed governors of Mizoram and Odisha by President Ram Nath Kovind on Friday.
