Aizawl, Oct. 12 (PTI): The central committee of the Young Mizo Association (YMA) has begun distributing relief in cash to the flood victims in the state.

Over Rs 1.47 crore was raised from different branches of the association, individuals and organisations for the cause, the president of the association, Lalbiakzuala said.

The relief will be distributed among 507 families in different districts.

Heavy rain triggered flash floods and landslides in the state in August and September, leaving behind a trail of destruction.

The families of the eight persons who lost their lives in flash floods, mudslides and landslides in southern Lunglei district would receive Rs 1.3 lakh each, while three injured in landslides would get Rs 50,000 each.

The relief would also go to those who ended up with broken or partially damaged houses after the rain, the amount of which would be fixed keeping in view the extent of damages, Lalbiakzuala said.

The assessments were made in accordance with the reports received from the association branches across the state, he added.

Landslides and incessant rains had blocked several roads, power supply lines were snapped and telecommunication system was disrupted.
