Guwahati, April 20: Union minister for women and child development Maneka Gandhi today discussed setting up of an animal welfare board in Assam with chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
She met the chief minister at his office here and spoke on women and child nutrition and animal protection.
A state government communiqué said all the modalities were being framed to constitute the welfare board.
The Animal Welfare Board of India is a statutory advisory body on animal welfare laws. It was established in 1962 under Section 4 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.
On child and nutrition scheme, the minister discussed modalities to strengthen nutritional mechanism of women and children and provide nutritional food sachets in schools and other centres where women and children come and assemble.
Giving an overview of the state government's initiatives in nutrition for children and women, Sonowal said the government was fully committed to implement nutritional food sachet schemes to ensure nutrition to women and children in the state. He hoped that once the scheme was fully implemented in the state, the issue of malnutrition would become passé.
The Union minister hailed the state government's role in the conservation of rhino and other endangered species in the national parks and other wildlife sanctuaries.
Minister of state (independent charge) for social welfare Naba Kumar Doley, chief secretary V.K. Pipersenia, additional chief secretary Ravi Capoor and other officials were present at the meeting.
