Hailakandi: The BJP's Karimganj district committee president Subrata Bhattacharjee tendered his resignation, expressing chagrin over alleged interference in various issues, including organisational matters, by top leaders of the party.

Bhattacharjee said the resignation letter has been sent to party president Ranjeet Dass and the high command will decide the next course of action.

The BJP top brass on Friday requested Bhattacharjee to withdraw his resignation but he is reportedly firm on his decision. Bhattacharjee was not available for comments.

Sources said the resignation is the result of difference of opinion among three top leaders of the party in the district. Bhattacharjee was unhappy regarding some of the issues such as action against the coal syndicate, transfer and posting of government officers and employees, land scandal of Eraligool village, organisation of annual Netaji Mela, entry of the Congress's municipal commissioners in the party among others.

The top three BJP leaders, including an MLA, allegedly strongly opposed Bhattachajee's decision. Bhattacharjee, as the party's Karimganj district president, was backed by state committee leaders Rajdeep Roy and Phani Sarma, a source said.

The source said the latest transfer of an additional superintendent of police of Karimganj and subsequent stay on the order fuelled Bhattacharjee's anger, he added.

Three municipal ward commissioners of Karimganj joined the BJP keeping Bhattacharjee in the dark but after a few days they again returned to the Congress, the source said.
