Kalam to attend convocation

Itanagar, Aug. 1: Former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam will arrive here on a two-day visit to Arunachal Pradesh on Tuesday.

The director of North East Regional Institute of Science and Technology (Nerist), J. Begi, today said Kalam would attend the second convocation of the institute as chief guest on Wednesday.

The former President will confer gold medals to the successful students of the institute in different fields of sciences, technology and management.

Arunachal Pradesh Governor Gen. (retd) J.J. Singh, who is also the president of Nerist Society, director of IIT Guwahati Prof. Gautam Baruah, who is the chairman of Nerist board of management, and a host of other dignitaries are also slated to be present for the occasion.

The first convocation of the institute, which completed 25 years this year and got deemed university status in 2005, was attended by President Pratibha Devisingh Patil on April 1 last year.

The former President will interact with students at the Darbar Hall of Raj Bhavan at 5pm on Tuesday. Apart from 200 schoolchildren and their teachers, Governor Gen. (retd) J.J. Singh, his wife Anupama Singh and others will also attend the programme.

This will be the second visit of Kalam, who visited the state in 2002.
